The Darwin Centre was designed to house the departments of Botany and Entomology connected to the original Victorian museum. Inspiration was drawn from the structure and detail of a wasps nest. Papery envelopes are built up in layer after layer building skin with eggs nestling in cells underneath museum collection. The nests are typically built hanging from another structure, which in this case is the two adjacent buildings. The westerly facing main uses coloured vertical blades for solar protection.
